The first time Nancee Neel visited Guatemala, tears flowed as the plane landed. She knew she was home.
For forty years Nancee has traveled, worked, and lived in Guatemala among the Maya. Her writing is born from intimate relationships with Maya women and their extended families and grounded in Maya culture and spirituality.
Her current joy is sharing the richness and depth of the Maya culture in Guatemala with others through writing.
Nancee is a retired psychotherapist and nurse-midwife who holds a doctoral degree in public health. She splits her time between Guatemala and Asheville, NC, where her work has appeared online in The Porch Magazine. A story has also been published in Parabola Magazine.
La primera vez que Nancee Neel visitó Guatemala, las lágrimas brotaron al aterrizar el avión. Sabía que estaba en casa.
Durante cuarenta años, Nancee ha viajado, trabajado y vivido en Guatemala entre los mayas. Su escritura nace de relaciones íntimas con mujeres mayas y sus familias extensas. Está arraigado en la cultura y espiritualidad maya.
Su alegría actual es compartir la riqueza y profundidad de la cultura maya en Guatemala con otros a través de la escritura.
Nancee es una psicoterapeuta jubilada y comadrona profesional que posee un doctorado en salud pública. Ella divide su tiempo entre Guatemala y Asheville, Carolina del Norte, donde su trabajo ha aparecido en línea en The Porch Magazine. También se ha publicado un relato en la revista Parabola.

Paula Nicho Cúmez
Maya Kaqchikel Artist — San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala
Paula Nicho Cúmez is a Maya Kaqchikel from San Juan Comalapa, Chimaltenango, Guatemala. She began her artistic life as a weaver, honoring the work of her mother, who was her teacher. Later, she became one of the first female painters in Comalapa, and founded the first collective of women Kaqchikel artists in her hometown.
Paula's oil paintings are inspired by the Maya cosmovision and her community. Her canvases come alive with images from her lived experiences and her dreams. Paula's art highlights the importance of her culture and identity, as well as the significance of the natural world, and our strained relationship with it.
Paula has exhibited internationally at the Venice Biennial, Art Basel Miami, and in Nagano, Japan, among others. She has participated in numerous national exhibitions.

Inicia su labor artística como tejedora honrando el trabajo que su madre le heredó, más tarde se dedicó a la pintura enfocándose en la pintura óleo sobre tela. Fue fundadora del primer colectivo de mujeres pintoras Kaqchikel en Comalapa y desde el 2024 trabaja de manera individual.
Sus obras parten de su cosmovisión y comunidad, retratando en lienzos sus vivencias, sueños, resaltando junto a su identidad y cultura la importancia que la naturaleza tiene en nuestro entorno y la relación estrecha que tenemos con ella.
Paula ha participado en exposiciones internacionales en la Bienal de Arte de Venecia, en Art Basel Miami, y en Nagano, Japón, entre otras. Ella también ha expuesto sus obras en numerosas exposiciones en Guatemala.
